On Monday, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer. The type is unspecified, but was found while he was being treated for an enlarged prostate.
“I was pretty surprised when they made that announcement,” said freshman Siena Kane. “I feel like with Queen Elizabeth’s passing, it was super sudden and people didn’t know what was going on,”
Usually, the palace does not disclose medical information to the public, but it was the King himself who wanted to share this in order to prevent speculation around his condition. King Charles will not appear at public events while his treatment is in process.
“I hope that all will go well with his treatments, but I think many people can’t help but wonder more details,” said freshman Aaliyah Recintos. “I understand why that information can not be released, but it also creates a lot of theories and almost adds to the drama when there are so many unknowns,”
This announcement set off news reports, hopes and prayers, but most of all, speculation. Many wonder what kind of cancer he is suffering from, as well as the severity, according to Kane. Prince Harry was seen taking an overnight flight back in London from Los Angeles to visit his father despite his long going feud with the royal family.
In the event Charles passes, William, prince of wales, would become king. Since Charles is stepping back during his treatments, William may make more appearances at public events. After William, the order of succession is: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, according to the Royal Family.
“All we can hope is that King Charles makes a fast recovery,” Kane said. “I’m sure he has a great team of doctors, but I wonder what will happen in the meantime while he is away.”
