Homecoming dance took place this weekend on a Saturday night from around 6 to 8 PM. For all those who attended, the general theme of the night was The Great Gatsby– channeling the 1920s flapper girls in all. 

Many of the students who attended the dance showed up in sparkly dresses in a variety of colors. “I decided to pick a red sparkly sequin dress,” said freshman Zoe Hogue. “I really felt that it was glamorous and rich, going with The Great Gatsby theme.” 

Rather than wearing the full-on 1920s flapper costumes, the majority of the students  went with a more casual- yet still on theme dress. Because of the sparkly, loose, and bold vibe that flapper dresses had, many of the students chose modern dresses with a twist of the 1920s essence. 

“After reading and watching The Great Gatsby in my sophomore year, I took inspiration from the book and film for my outfit,” said senior Bibi. “I believe that the dress I chose properly fit into the theme of 1920’s flappers with all the pearls, fishnet stockings, and fringe I had on. I also chose to try to mimic the trending makeup of the 1920s to really pull it all together.” 

The 1920s flapper dresses may now be out of style, but that didn’t stop students from finding cuter, more up to date outfits that could still represent the roaring 20s. Not only did the sparkly and fringed dresses show off the theme of the night, but also the ones that were bold and eye catching, helping to embody the true flapper spirit.

“The flappers in the 1920s really pushed the boundaries of female fashion,” said history teacher Ms. Sell. “They wore shorter shirts and higher heels, they loved to dance and really pushed the gender boundaries.”

The homecoming theme this year was more about just dressing up as another decade for fun. It represented the history of growth, change, and pushing the boundaries that have led us to have the life and opportunities that we have today. 

“I felt like the theme was really creative,” Zoe said. “It allowed us to make our outfits resemble the 1920s flappers while still wearing something cute.”
