The annual Walk for Uganda is set to take place this Saturday, Oct. 28 at 9:45 a.m. The objective of the walk is to help raise education, food, healthcare, and residential care funds for the Sacred Heart school community in Uganda.

“The main purpose of the walk is to bring more access to education to our sister schools in Uganda which are the Kangole School for Girls and St. Charles,” said leader of the Global Women’s Rights Club senior Deirdre Kenny. “Alongside the schools, we work to raise money in order to provide meals for the girl’s school and provide books for the St. Charles school,”

The event is an annual tradition where Sacred Heart high school students of all grades take a short walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, according to junior Margaux Tellini. It’s a chance to have fun and walk for a cause.

“The Walk for Uganda is a super fun school event that always has a great turn out,” Tellini said. “In years past I have gone with a couple of friends and our moms which is always a fun way to spend time with one another,”

Tickets to attend the event are $25 and individuals can donate to support the cause without attending the walk, according to sacredsf. The walk meets at Crissy Field and then goes across the Golden Gate Bridge.

The walk provides tuition and meal plan assistance, service hours for those attending the event, as well as allowing ways for the education they receive to be more accessible, according to Kenny.

“I have participated in the Walk for Uganda ever since I went to Convent middle school,” Tellini said. “I participate because I think it’s important to support our sister school in Uganda and create more equitable opportunities for education globally,”

Only around 53% of young girls complete primary school education in Uganda, according to Northwestern University. In 2022 the school walk raised $4,234, creating opportunities for multiple students at the sister schools, as students were given scholarships.

“Last year we were able to raise enough money for five full-year scholarship tuitions which was pretty amazing,” said Kenny. “We’re excited to see what will happen this year!”
