On Wed. during the performing arts block, juniors gathered for an assembly in the Columbus room on financial literacy. This marked financial professional Jordan Hymowitz’s second visit to Convent & Stuart Hall to give a presentation on investing in the stock market. Hymowitz focussed on introducing students to the concept of investing and why it is important to do so.
“I really enjoyed learning about the history of the stock market,” junior Sterling Loretto said. “I thought the presentation was really informative.”
Part of Hymowitz’s presentation touched on the importance of investing wisely. He urged students not to follow the crowd and to diversify their portfolios to include a variety of companies in different sectors and markets. Hymowitz also stressed the importance of investing in companies from around the world. He also encouraged students to try investing now as a way to gain some experience with the stock market.
“I liked all the graphs he included in his presentation,” junior Vera Russel said. “I thought he did a great job explaining them.”
The assembly included an activity in which students could raise their hands and explain why they were interested in investing in a specific company chosen from a list. Hymowitz encouraged students to think for themselves and come up with their own perspectives and angles on why a certain stock may perform well.
“I thought it was interesting that he encouraged the student body to start investing now,” junior Layla Grace Dixon said. “I would never have considered investing as a teenager.”
To conclude the assembly, Hymowitz gave students a handout including some of his key investing tips. Furthermore, he opened up the floor for students to pose questions and ask for financial advice.
“I didn’t know a lot about the stock market before the assembly,” junior Sterling Loretto said. “I will be sure to bring these insights with me as I think about investing in the future.”
