This morning, Spotify’s annual ‘Spotify Wrapped’ was released to users around the world. Spotify wrapped is a way for listeners to receive their music listening stats including their top artists, songs and genres.
Spotify Wrapped is usually released every year towards the end of November, or in early December. Spotify collects all listening data from January 1st to October 31st. Spotify listeners and music lovers anticipate this event every year, according to sophomore Julia McKinnon.
“I love seeing my Spotify Wrapped every year,” McKinnon said, “I like to see what I have been listening to and my top stats,”
Spotify Wrapped was started in 2013, but was called ‘A Year in Review.’ Later, in 2016, the name officially changed to Wrapped. When logged into Spotify, there are features where you can see how much you listened and in which months you listened the most.
“I like seeing how much music I listen to throughout the year,” junior Amelia Batt said. “Almost every year I am surprised by the results, because they are so different than what I thought or predicted,”
Spotify Wrapped had a new feature this year where you are presented with a superhero or mythical creature based off of your listening history called ‘Your Listening Personality.’ Listeners were given creatures such as vampires and cyclopes, according to Spotify.
According to Billboard, another additional feature of Spotify Wrapped this year is that Spotify required all artists to film a short video which spotify would send out to their top listeners. Taylor Swift was the most listened to artist this year with 26 billion streams worldwide. Following her was Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, and Drake.
“I was very excited to see that Taylor Swift was the top artist this year,” sophomore Elizabeth Fox said. “She has had so much success this year, and this accomplishment adds to that,”
With Spotify having over 551 million users and listeners, Spotify Wrapped is spread out all throughout the world. People all over are checking and posting their top songs and artists, according to Fox.
“I think that Spotify Wrapped is super cool and it’s a fun way to engage with the app and with others,” McKinnon said, “I cannot wait to keep listening and see my results next year.”
