After four years of waiting, the Summer Olympics are back. The Olympics are a series of international games with the participation of thousands of athletes. They are divided into a summer and winter section.
This year’s Olympics will take place in Paris, France, during July and August. This year marks France’s sixth time hosting the Olympics, and Paris will be the second city to have hosted it three times.
“I love watching the Olympics,” freshman Fiona Brentani said. “It is a great source of entertainment and inspiration for me,”
Preparation for this year’s Olympics has been well underway since 2022 when 120 spots across eleven different sports were filled. There will be 32 different, with some of the most popular ones being gymnastics, track and field, soccer, basketball, and swimming, according to The International Olympic Committee.
“I am excited for the Summer Olympics because it has not happened for so long,” freshman Leila Sawicki said. “I am especially looking forward to the swimming portion.”
The Olympics originated in Ancient Greece, where they, too, held games every four years in Zeus, the king of the gods, honor. Over time, the Olympics greatly evolved, creating a section specifically for winter sports and expanding its participants. With the Olympics representing nearly every nation in our modern-day games, the International Sports Federation (IF) was created to manage and organize the Olympic Games.
“I am so excited to watch the Olympics with my family,” Brentani said, “I have very fond memories of it, and it is now a tradition for us to always watch it together.”
