Yesterday was music’s biggest night, the 66th Annual Grammy Awards. From Taylor Swift announcing a new album and making history, all the way to first time wins, the much anticipated award show was eventful.
The first award of the night, Best Pop Solo Performance went to Miley Cyrus for her song ‘Flowers.’ This was Cyrus’ first ever Grammy award, according to The Grammys. Later in the night she also took home the award for Record of the Year.
“I was so surprised when I found out that she had never won a Grammy before,” sophomore Mallory Parent said. “She’s been making music for so long; it came as a total shock,”
The night was also filled with many performances by musical artists like SZA, Travis Scott, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eillish and more. In addition to these performances, there were many music legends who performed, including Joni Mitchell and Billy Joel.
Another notable performance was Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman performing her song “Fast Car,” which Combs famously covered. This was Chapman’s first public performance in over fifteen years.
Taylor Swift won the award for Best Pop Vocal Album, for her album “Midnights.” When she won, she announced she would be releasing a brand new album titled “The Tortured Poets Department” on April 19th. According to MTV, Swift is known for these surprise announcements, like in 2022 when she announced that she would be releasing the Grammy winning, ‘Midnights.’
“I am so excited for the new album,” sophomore Elizabeth Fox said. “I am always so surprised by what taylor does and I cannot wait to see what comes next,”
In addition to announcing a new album, Taylor Swift also made history as the first person ever to win 4 Album of the Year awards. She previously was the first woman to have 3 Album of the Year awards alongside Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon.
Along with all these awards, there were also many artists who took home Grammy awards, in the pre-award show. These artists include boygenius for Best Rock Performance and Best Alternative Album, SZA and Phoebe Bridgers for Best Pop Duo Performance, and Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves for best Country Duo Performance.
“So many things happened during this year’s Grammys,” Parent said. “I always get too excited to see who wins and for the surprises that come with it.”
