Franz Kafka’s passport photo was taken in Prague between 1915 and 1916. Born into a middle-class, Jewish family, Kafka began work at the Workers Insurance Company around the time of the photograph, a change that complicated the extent of his creative career and contributed to the complexity and melancholy nature that often characterizes depictions of the famed author.
