A ring purchased by a junior, and it was handed to them at the Chapel by a senior. Juniors could pick between a gold or silver setting, and a red, blue, or black stone.

Today, the annual school ring ceremony occurred. This long-running tradition allows the senior class to “ring” to a certain junior student. This ceremony signifies the end of the school year for the seniors and the beginning of the senior year for the juniors.

During the ceremony, every junior student gets called up alphabetically to receive a ring they have either purchased or brought from home to be handed to them by a senior with whom they have formed a connection. The senior will say a few words of advice and love to the junior student as well.

“I didn’t know what the ring ceremony was or what to expect from it,” freshman Lela Nachury-Reif said. “I thought it was super sweet and heartwarming to see the bonds that were created,”

This year was the first since the COVID-19 pandemic where the ceremony was held live and in the Be Mardel Chapel. In previous years, it has been online, over video, or distanced.

The focus of the ceremony was on the rising seniors and their next step in their journey. The end of the ceremony is as seen with the seniors turning over their rings signifying their graduation.

“What I find most fun about this ceremony is that even if you are not an active participant, it is still entertaining,” sophomore Elizabeth Fox said. “I think that it creates something else to look forward to,”

The boys’ Stuart Hall class has a similar ceremony. In theirs, they passed along ties and gave short speeches and words of wisdom to the junior class as well.

The ring ceremony is also a tradition throughout the network of Sacred Heart schools across the world. It signifies the bonds created between the students and the friendships created throughout the years.

“I am excited for when I get to experience this tradition firsthand,” Nachury-Reif said. “It seems like something fulfilling and heartwarming.”
