The Oscars honor the best movies, actors, and filmmakers every year. The event is highly anticipated and one of the most popular events in Hollywood, with millions of people watching them. This year, the 98th Academy Awards ceremony took place on March 15.
“I love the Oscars, I watch them every year with my family,” junior Mia Greenwood said. “My favorite part is seeing all the amazing outfits and watching the celebrity interviews,”
This year’s Oscar selected the Best Film, “One Battle After Another” directed by Paul Thomass Anderson. Anderson has been nominated 14 times throughout his career, and finally took home the award.
“I don’t really pay much attention to the Oscars,” ethics teacher Clint Hackenburg said. “The best films rarely win, and the same is often true of the best performances.”
Hackenburg’s point is often made in the world of critics surrounding the Oscars. Many view the Oscars as very arbitrary, with talented people rarely winning and more basic slightly less talented people often winning.
Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for his role in “Sinners”, and the movie also won Best Original Screenplay. Michael B. Jordan gave an emotional speech filled with gratitude for his many supporters, especially his family.
“I watched ‘Sinners’ and I thought it was great,” freshman Maria Lutz said. “I think Michael B. Jordan definitely deserves Best Actor.”
This year’s Oscars highlighted long-awaited, deserving directors and amazing actors. The event continues to showcase self expression and talent while attracting a large viewing audience. Whether one likes the Oscars or thinks it’s overrated, the awards show sure does get a lot of attention.
“I think the Oscars is an important night,” Greenwood said. “It’s entertaining, positive, and cool to see so many talented people all together.”
