After a week of tryouts, the Convent Soccer coaches have drafted a Varsity team and a JV team. Varsity Coach Ashley, who played Division I soccer at UC Santa Barbara, Varsity Coach Sophie, who played goalkeeper at NYU, and JV Coach Mel, who also coaches for the club United, have been organizing tryouts this week at the Beach Chalet soccer fields.
“I am so ready for the soccer season to begin,” sophomore Maya Paine said. “It was so fun being on Varsity last year and I really hope I’ll make it again this year.”
Last year’s Varsity team, coached by Coach Ashley and Coach Sophie, won against Bentley high school as well as the majority of their preseason games, according to Paine. In about two weeks, Varsity will face off against Drew highschool, who they did not play last year.
“I’m very excited for the JV season to start up again,” JV Coach Mel said. “We had such a strong season last year, I hope we can just pick up right where we left off.”
Although the JV Convent team began the season slowly, by the end of the season they had won almost all of their games. Importantly, the girls at tryouts are reminded that no matter what team you make, they are all under the same program, according to Coach Mel.
“I really appreciate the sense of community the coaches bring to tryouts,” junior Maya Gee said. “It helps me focus on trying my best and playing soccer with my friends, rather than stressing out about what team I’m going to make.”
Preseason games, which are matches that help your team prepare for the upcoming season, will begin shortly after this week. Since the girls have practice five days a week, they will hopefully be ready by the time of their first game, according to Paine.
“I’m looking forward to our first game of the season, as well as the first official practice,” Paine said. “I’m just overall thrilled that soccer season is finally here.”
