As the centerpiece to San Francisco’s Art Week, the Fog Art + Design fair returns for its 12th year at Fort Mason. In celebrating today’s leading contributors to the many worlds of design and visual arts, the fair brings together leading international art galleries, according to FOG, and has become a focal point for art communities on the West Coast.
To reach different audiences and preferences, the fair holds a unique pioneering spirit in its hybrid approach and intimate presentation of art and design, creating a dynamic environment for art enthusiasts.
“I remember visiting the fair and being surprised at how many different styles of art were shown in the same place,” senior Winnie Chun said. “I saw different kinds of contemporary and modern pieces as well as pieces that had a lot of color,”
Funds that are raised at the FOG Art + Design fair primarily comes from its Preview Gala and other fundraising events go towards supporting the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and their education initiatives and exhibitions. Previous fundraising events from FOG have served over 140,00 students, teachers, youth and families through online and in-person experiences, according to SFMOMA.
“Although I’ve never been, I can see how a lot of fairs like these attract a lot of people from different backgrounds,” senior Pilar Ponce de Leon said. “There is something there for everyone.”
After taking office just over a year ago, San Francisco mayor Daniel Lurie stated that the “creative class, our arts, and our culture is what’s going to drive [San Francisco’s] economic recovery.” As its biggest showcase since opening in 2012, FOG’s fair this year will host 61 exhibitors, 16 that are local, and the rest being from around the country and globe.
“I believe that it’s important to have events like these to keep the economy going,” Physics teacher Matthew Woodard said. “Especially having programs that go back to providing opportunities for families around San Francisco, it’s good to see.”
The exhibit itself is hosted at Fort Mason in Piers 2 and 3 with different talks and seminars based on artistic design, inquisition and exploration, according to FOG. There are also galas and forums that grant exclusive access to the exhibitions as well as memberships at SFMOMA.
