This year, the Convent field hockey program expanded with the addition of its very first junior varsity team. With so many new freshmen wanting to join, Convent was able to grow and have both a JV and varsity squad.
The addition of a JV team gives new players a chance to build skills and gain game experience. It also strengthens the program for the future by preparing athletes to move up to varsity.
“Having a JV team makes it less stressful because we can focus on learning and improving,” sophomore Yosan Yosef said. “It gives us more chances to play and be part of the program,”
JV played its first game on Sept. 4 against Lick-Wilmerding High School. After four intense quarters, the match ended in a tie.
“The first game was exciting,” junior Sabrina Chua said. “Even though we tied, it felt good to know we could compete.”
On Sept. 11, JV faced Marin Academy in its second match. That game also ended in a tie, showing the team’s competitive start to the season.
“Starting a JV team is a big step for our program,” field hockey Coach Allison Lovejoy said. “It shows that field hockey is growing bigger, and the players are eager to keep getting better. When we started this program, we barely had enough for a varsity team, and now we have two teams.”
The team looks forward to the rest of the season as they continue to learn and grow together. With more games ahead, the players hope to turn their strong starts into wins.
“We’re hoping to get our first win soon,” Yosef said. “But we are excited to keep improving and working as a team.”
