Sophomore Gia Monachino won the All-Tournament award at The Hoops vs. Cancer Classic held by The Branson School at College of Marin.
Eight Bay Area high schools participated in the Classic held on Dec. 11-13. At the end of the tournament, the top ten players were chosen for the award by all of the coaches, according to Athletic Director Elena De Santis.
“I was really shocked and surprised,” Monachino said. “I was totally unaware of the award and I was honored that somebody thought that I should be an all-league player.”
The varsity basketball team won Consolation Champions after winning against The Branson School and Galileo High School but losing to St. Joseph-Notre Dame in the last minute due to a three-point shot, according to Monachino.
“Gia is one of the toughest, hard-working players we have,” De Santis said. “She fights for and gets rebounds against girls taller than her. Coaches have referred to her as the ‘x-factor’. She can really come in and change the game for Convent.”
