On Sunday, Jan. 11, the Golden Globes held their 83rd award show in Beverly Hills, California. For the second consecutive year in a row, American stand-up comedian and actress Nikki Glaser hosted the show.
The two big winners for this year’s award show were the film “One Battle After Another”, and television series “Adolescence”. Some other winners were “Sinners” as well as “The Pitt” for Best Television Series, and Noah Wyle for Best Male Actor, according to Golden Globes.
“I was also really excited to see that ‘The Day of the Jackal’ was nominated for two awards,” junior Alexandra Herrmann said. “I was also excited that ‘Pitt’ won Best Drama Television Series as they are both great shows.”
The Netflix hit, “Adolescence”, follows a British family as their 13 year old son, Jamie Miller, played by Owen Cooper, as he is accused of killing a young girl in his class. This television drama series received five nominations in four categories such as Best Performance by a Male Actor, Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role and more, according to People.
“I was surprised when I found out that the main character in Adolescence was so young,” junior Charlotte McGinty said. “I thought that he was much older than he actually is.”
The horror thriller film, “Sinners”, took home two Golden Globes at this year’s awards ceremony. The film won Best Score and Cinematic and Box Office achievement. Producer and director Ryan Coogler, known for his part in Marvel’s “Black Panther”, accepted the awards, according to Nola.
“Since the year my dad was born, the Golden Globes have honored excellence in film and television,” music teacher Phillip Harris said. “Though I didn’t catch all of it, perhaps the highlight was seeing my sister’s childhood friend, Ryan Coogler, accept one of two awards amongst seven nominations. It made me think of Theory of Knowledge in a sense: what classifies as art, and to what extent is success measured by awards?”
Nikki Glaser showed off her comedian skills during the award show Sunday night. Some of her roasts of the night were towards George Clooney, Kevin Hart and Leonardo DiCaprio. Glaser roasted George Clooney for playing himself in “Jay Kelley”, Kevin Hart for his short stature and Leonardo DiCaprio for his famous history in dating younger women, according to Golden Globes.
“I think Nikki Glaser was a great host for the Golden Globes,” Herrmann said. “I thought that the Kevin Hart joke that she made was super funny.”
