This Monday, the “Golden Globes” nominations for 2026 were released. The “Golden Globes” have been around for over 80 years and honor excellence in film and television. The awards show takes place annually and is televised on CBS.
“I think that the nominations were generally fair this year,” junior Aaliyah Recinos said. “Though I was surprised that Wicked: Part 2 was snubbed,”
Every year, along with the release of the nominations, students judge whether many of the nominations were well deserved or if other films and shows were snubbed. Additionally, typically a small handful of films and shows will dominate the nominations, receiving recognition across many film-related fields.
Over the last few years, television (TV) has been receiving more critical acclaim compared to traditional movies, resulting in there being more competition amongst TV-related categories. Furthermore, streaming viewership has grown 71% over the last four years, according to Nielsen. This means that Americans watch more and more TV compared to movies, a sentiment echoed by math teacher Lindsay MacGarva.
“I haven’t watched many of the nominated movies, though I have seen a lot of the nominated TV shows,” MacGarva said. “I think TV is generally doing better right now compared to movies.”
Every year, various TV shows, movies, and actors compete for nominations across many categories, such as drama motion picture, musical or comedy motion picture, animated feature film, actor in a drama motion picture and so on. The competition was considered especially tough this year, according to sophomore Beatrice Yung.
“I think the competition for nominations was really tough this year,” Yung said. “A lot of really good movies and TV shows were nominated.”
One of the most competitive categories for nominations this year was for animated feature films. Some of the nominated films include Zootopia 2, Elio, and the highly successful Kpop Demon Hunters among others.
“I’m really happy that critics recognized the superior animation in Kpop Demon Hunters,” senior Anabella Terry said. “I think it was better than all the other nominated films.”
The awards ceremony will be held on Jan 11., 2026 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Many students await to see which films and shows will win.
“I love awards season because it helps me find new movies and shows to watch,” Recinos said. “I look forward to seeing which movies and shows win this year at the ‘Golden Globes’.”
