This past week and Labor Day weekend had San Francisco experiencing weather highs in the 70 degree range. Sunshine and blue skies have created gorgeous backdrops for local tourism, park social get-togethers, and sports events.
Normally, during this time of the year, seasonal changes are happening and the weather starts to cool down. However, this weeklong heat streak has given San Francisco the name “late bloomer” according to senior Maya Gee.
Typically, due to a high-pressure system that causes low coastal clouds to dissipate, the Bay Area has been experiencing weather temperatures about ten degrees warmer than average. The dissipation of low coastal clouds also result in the blue skies and lower humidity, according to The National Weather Service.
“I think the weather has been really nice as we start the school year,” Gee said. “I wish this weather was during the summer, though, because it was really cold,”
A lot of school sports practices are after the school day, as the temperatures are starting to cool down. Nonetheless, the warm weather can make practices a little more tiring, especially if they are outdoors, according to senior Abby Chacon-Lara.
“While the warm weather is really nice, it is also important to stay hydrated,” Chacon-Lara said. “Sometimes I get bloody noses from being dehydrated in the heat,”
Over the weekend, the San Francisco Giants played Friday evening and on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. In addition to the weather, the Giants won two out of the three game series against the Orioles according to MLB.
“It was really nice watching the Giants game on Friday night,” senior Pilar Ponce de Leon said. “The sunset was really nice on top of the big win against the Orioles,”
The San Francisco weather has also made great opportunities for other outdoor activities like hiking, biking, golfing, and going to the beach. The city offers a lot of public spaces to utilize for days like these, according to physics teacher Matt Woodard.
“This weekend, I got a nice round of golf in,” Woodard said. “Although it was quite warm, it was really nice having no strong winds,”
As the week goes on, the weather is expected to cool back down to the 60s according to The Weather Channel. Although it is expected to cool down, it will just be going back to the normal, beautiful San Francisco weather, according to Gee.
“It will be nice for it to cool down again,” Gee said. “We can go back to our blue skies and nice weather.”
