This past week, Convent fall sports have been on a roll, starting with volleyball. Both the junior varsity (JV) team and the varsity team won both of their games, kicking off a strong start to the season. The games continue throughout the season, inviting students to show up, cheer, and support as their classmates play.
On Monday, Aug. 25, Convent had their first volleyball game at home, where they played Gateway High School. As JV finished off their game, beating Gateway in two sets, varsity came in just as hot to finish off the show and beat Gateway in four sets. Many students came and cheered to support their fellow classmates, as well as teachers, making it much more of an exciting game.
“As I was playing, I felt the energy throughout the room as our classmates were cheering us on,” sophomore Laela Koenigsberg said. “Everyone made our first home game much more fun,”
On Tuesday, Aug. 26, Convent played against The International School, where they had their first away game. Again, JV beat International in two sets, and Varsity beat them in three. This is just the start of the season, and one can only imagine what the Convent Cubs have in store to come.
“I love coming to the games and watching my classmates play,” sophomore Seneca Moeller said. “They always make my long days at school better,”
Volleyball is one of the most popular sports at Convent, as over 40 girls play the sport and are split between the freshman-sophomore, JV, and varsity teams. Because victory is the volleyball program’s main goal, the teams are highly competitive and many athletes work for years to climb the hierarchical ladder to make the varsity team, according to volleyball coach Ellery Jones.
“Every one on the frosh-soph team is really motivated, and I think that the goal for me as a coach, as well as the entire coaching staff of the volleyball program, is for the frosh-soph team to be winning games and focusing on the athletes’ development as individual players,” Jones said. “We want everyone to get as close to their maximum potential during this season,”
Although the season is just beginning, the Convent Cubs are on point and ready to go. Next week, the freshman-sophomore team will start competing as well, allowing Convent another chance to cheer for their classmates.
“I love playing at our home gym,” said Koenigsberg. “It always puts me in a good mood.”
