Tonight, May 15, 2025, is the opening night of the 2025 spring play: Midsummer Night’s Dream. Unlike previous productions, this one will be held outdoors, at Lafayette Park. Performances will be held on May 15 and 16, both at 6 p.m.
Due to the unusual circumstances of the setting, there have been many obstacles to tackle throughout the production process, according to sophomore Keira Patel. One of these was an issue with microphones, as there was a question of how they would handle the outdoors.
“During the performance, the mics used for A Midsummer’s Night Dream were perfect for combating any sound lost to the wind,” Patel said. “They ensured that the experience was immersive,”
Each year, the school puts on a middle school play that involves the high school students in a different way than the other high school productions. High schoolers are given a service opportunity by participating as a crew member mentoring the other middle schoolers. This includes helping build the set while also guiding the younger students throughout the process.
“Although it was sometimes frustrating, it was really fun and enjoyable to teach the kids,” freshman Anika Agarwal said. “I learned so many new skills and it was such a new experience for me to be on crew for the first time,”
Aside from the high schoolers, middle school students are also invited to participate in the play as cast or crew members. Students on crew assisted in backstage reorganization, painting backdrops, finding props and more.
The plot of the show is centered around a group of four Athenians who run away and, due to the fairy Puck and fairy king Oberon, fall into a complicated love situation. Meanwhile, Oberon himself is dealing with his own relationship with his queen, Titania, dragging Puck into the situation on several occasions.
“I absolutely loved A Midsummer’s Night Dream! The outdoor set flawlessly aligned with the underlying currents of nature and whimsy inherent in the piece,” Patel said. “The actors were so perfect for their roles and the intricate props brought the story to life.”
