Today, the highly anticipated homecoming volleyball games took place in the Herbert Center gymnasium against Summit Tamalpais High School. Junior Varsity took place at 4 p.m., with Convent quickly winning the game in two sets. Not soon after, Varsity took the court at 5:30 p.m. and won in 3 sets.
“I went to the games tonight and it was so fun to be in the student section with my friends,” sophomore Lela Nachury-Reif said. “I’m glad they won and everyone in the crowd was very energetic and excited to be there,”
The homecoming volleyball game is one of the highest attended games the entire school year, according to Nachury-Reif. Students, parents, teachers, and other members of the community came together to support the Cubs by sitting on the bleachers or getting a higher view from the mezzanine. The Convent student section, packed with fans, enthusiastically cheered on their friends on the court with signs and cheers.
“The games went well tonight and it reminded me a lot of how fun homecoming was when I was a student,” Convent volleyball assistant coach Colette Hom said. “It’s amazing to see how many people really show up for their school and it’s also a fun celebration of all the work our players put in throughout the season.”
Additionally, the game was themed “red out”, encouraging everyone to show up in red clothing in support of the Convent school colors. At school today, the spirit theme day was also “red out” to build anticipation to the game and show school spirit. This past week, every day has had a different theme leading up to homecoming, with days such as student teacher swap day, jersey day, and pajama day.
“Homecoming is fun because it feels very different than any other game,” junior Francesqua Lauterbach said. “I love how students made it feel special by decorating the gym and encouraging everyone to come. It definitely adds pressure, but I thought we dealt with that tonight and still played well.”
At about halfway through the season, both Junior Varsity and Varsity will have a few more home games and some more away games as well. Both teams have been successful so far, and we hope to see more great games in the future from Convent volleyball.
“Games like homecoming build community by bringing people together to support one another,” Nachury-Reif said. “It’s so fun to see both my friends and classmates on the court and to watch them represent our school through sports.”
