Starting last week, on March 11, choices for the next year’s courses were opened and available online. Since then, students have been deciding which classes they want to take for the following school year such as honors or Advanced Placement courses.
For sophomores, they are deciding to go the Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate route. Meanwhile, freshmen are deciding on Honors, AP, or normal classes, according to freshman Trinity Joa.
“I was having trouble with deciding on whether or not to take AP US history,” Joa said. “I don’t really enjoy US history, but I felt like I wanted to take an AP, and I just wasn’t sure about any of the other AP options,”
While the underclassmen are picking classes, juniors and seniors do not have to. Seniors because they are graduating, and juniors because for the IB program, classes tend to span over two years, meaning that they will have the same courses next year.
Some freshmen also must choose another art class for next year as well. However, freshmen who took drama, vocal music, or instrumental music, have finished their art requirement this year and may choose to take an elective.
“Since I did drama this year, I’m planning on doing AP Art History for my elective next year,” freshman Isabel Schmidt said. “I’m excited to learn more from it and to shift my perspective on art,”
These electives would be AP Statistics, Introduction to Coding, or any of the art options, which vary in length – some are one semester while others are yearlong. All AP classes still require the AP exam at the end of the year, even if they are taken as electives.
“I still need to finish the second half of my art requirement,” Joa said. “I’m choosing to take the studio art course next year.”
