The top seven runners on the varsity cross-country team will be competing in the North Coast Section Championship this weekend, where the top six teams in each division will qualify for the state competition.
“The intensity and competitiveness is going to be harder,” freshman Katie Newbold said. “Everyone is competing to go to states.”
Timing chips will be tied to each individual’s shoelace to record the runner’s time. The race will end on a mat with sensors which will give runners a more accurate finish time.
“Instead of someone ripping our numbers off, it is more efficient to have it electronically,” senior Amelia Baier said.
Last year, the cross-country team placed 10th at the state competition.
“We are better this year,” Baier said, “I expect us to be in the top three.”
The girls will race in Hayward, Calif. at 11:45 a.m. with the boy’s race to follow at 1:25 p.m.
