Recently, there has been much rainfall in the Bay Area. The rain is brought by an atmospheric river called the Pineapple Express. The Pineapple Express transports moisture in the air long distances. It is caused by low pressure and is a fast, narrow river in the sky.
“I usually love the rain,” sophomore Siena Kane said. “However, when I have games in lacrosse for Convent, it becomes very annoying because the stick gets slippery and very cold. “
The Pineapple Express moves from Hawaii across the Pacific Ocean and hits northern California. This has led to vast amounts of water this past week. While the rain has already poured down on San Francisco since last Friday, we still have more stormy days ahead, according to the Weather Channel.
“One time, I was hanging out with my friends,” Vivienne Legg said. “We were in the rain and playing music, and it is now one of my favorite memories of the rain.”
The pouring rain in San Francisco is predicted to last until Saturday, with a break of sun on Wednesday. Rain from the Pineapple Express typically lasts only a few days. However, this storm has stalled over the Bay Area, prolonging the rains and winds. The Pineapple Express can have such intense rains that it once dumped roughly five inches of rain in California in one day, according to the National Ocean Service.
“I did have a scary thing happen to me a couple of years ago,” art faculty Julie Martin said. “I had a leak in my room that my building wouldn’t fix, so every time it rained, I would get stressed out; because I don’t live there anymore, the rain is once again just peaceful for me.”
San Francisco is not the only city facing stormy weather. In Tahoe, a winter storm warning advises travelers to stay home or, if travel is mandatory, to carry food, flashlights, and water in cars in case of possible disaster. Due to wind gusts of up to 100 mph and roughly three feet of snow, the warning lasts until Wednesday at 7 p.m., with a potential extension, according to the National Weather Service.
“When it is raining, one of my favorite things to do is just stay inside,” Kane said. “It is always fun watching movies with my sisters and brother as it pours outside.”
