This week, the Convent varsity soccer team had their first matchup against International High School. They won this game with a score of two to one, with freshman Lara Jadallah and sophomore Stella Ramelot scoring. While during the first half of the game Convent was losing, they eventually did score two goals, which speaks to the resilience of the team.
“While I was so proud of Stella and Lara when they scored, I was also proud of my whole team for keeping up the soccer and not giving up,” Paine said. “I am so grateful to be a part of a team that keeps fighting until the last whistle,”
While the Cubs’ victory occurred on Tuesday, they face Drew tonight at Kimbell Fields at 5:30 p.m. This game is only the second matchup of varsity’s preseason and they have many more games to come, according to varsity coach Sophie Frank.
“We have a lot of upcoming games,” Frank said. “I know the girls are very excited to play!”
While the varsity team has kickstarted their preseason games, Convent’s JV soccer team’s first game is on Dec. 6 against International. While the varsity team has had only one week of practice to prepare for their first game, JV girls receive about three weeks of practice, according to JV coach Mel Fathi.
“I know these additional weeks before our first game will allow time for some real conditioning and crucial skills to work on,” Fathi said. “I am so proud of my JV girls and can’t wait for December sixth,”
Both varsity and junior varsity soccer have upcoming games for any member of the student body to attend, and students can easily access the facts about the location and timing of a game on any of the televisions in any classroom on either campus. Last year, there was a lot of support from the sidelines which helpfully contributed to the energy of the Convent soccer players, according to Paine.
“I love looking into the sidelines and seeing my friends,” said Paine. “They’re always cheering for me and my teammates, and I think when students come to watch our soccer games they add to the atmosphere and make it way more fun!”
