Across America, there have been a staggering number of listeria outbreaks, leading to multiple companies recalling produce. In addition to prior outbreaks of deli meats and poultry products, the bacteria has spread to include frozen waffles. An example of the surge is Treehouse Foods, which voluntarily recalled numerous products after discovering listeria contamination in their facilities.
“When I heard of all the recalls, I was really shocked,” sophomore Wren Walton said. “I know many people enjoy eating frozen waffles, so I hope people are okay,”
In addition to the waffles, listeria is a bacteria found in many foods. Most people react to listeria with mild symptoms such as fever, nausea, and vomiting; however, for at-risk individuals such as seniors, pregnant women, and children, it could lead to very grave health issues, according to Treehouse Foods, Inc. The CDC estimates around 260 deaths annually due to listeria.
“While I have never heard of listeria, diseases are something I think about quite a bit when I pay attention to the news,” learning strategist Jen Kramer said. “It’s wonderful that it was found, and I hope the company will correct the error,”
Listeria can be found in many everyday foods and ingredients. Some examples include raw milk, smoked seafood, raw seafood, soft-serve ice cream, deli meats, and cheese. It is important to note that regardless of temperature, frozen foods can contain listeria as well. By avoiding these foods, people can be sure to stay healthy and avoid falling ill.
“The recent listeria outbreak is scary and unfortunate,” said junior Ashley Hanover. “I really hope they get it under control,”
To stop the spread of listeria, various companies are continuing to recall their products. Furthermore, companies have posted warnings regarding the possible contamination. To minimize the outbreak, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommends keeping surfaces clean and throwing away any contaminated foods.
“It is especially concerning how the bacteria remained even after being frozen,” Walton said. “The company must have lost a lot of money from all the callbacks and refunding they are doing, but I am glad they are because it is the right thing to do.”
