On Sept. 7, the junior varsity volleyball team won first place at their first tournament of the season. This tournament took place at California Crosspoint Academy, a high school in Hayward, California.
The Cubs competed in their first game at 8 a.m. and finished their championship game at 6 p.m. The student athletes on the team worked all day and tirelessly for their victory, according to junior Abby Chacon-Lara.
“We had a lot of fun playing in the tournament on Saturday,” Chacon Lara said. “Now that we are a couple weeks into the season, I feel we are able to play a lot better since now we have more chemistry and have been spending time practicing together,”
The Cubs played a total of six games, competing against teams from all across the Bay Area. Because of their undefeated record, they played an additional championship game at the end of the tournament. As a reward, the team received a personalized first place trophy, according to freshman Masha Kushner.
“I’m really proud of how we played as a team,” Kushner said. “I think this win will give us confidence and energy for our upcoming games, especially since we are still so early in the season,”
This week, the JV and varsity volleyball teams have two games scheduled against both International High School and University High School. In addition, both teams will be competing at tournaments in Marin and Hayward, according to sophomore Bibi Renazco-Magelssen.
“I had so much fun playing at the volleyball tournament and winning the championship game,” said Renazco-Magelssen. “Especially since the tournament is so far away, it’s cool to play against teams that we don’t usually see during the season,”
Many students choose to participate on a sports team in the fall. In addition to volleyball, sports like field hockey, golf, tennis, cross country, football and sailing are offered to all students during this season.
“It’s great how our community offers so many sports teams and also teams for players at all different levels,” Chacon-Lara said. “It creates a very inviting atmosphere for everyone and encourages people to try a new sport.”
