Last night, all three of the girls’ volleyball teams had their first home games in a triple-header against Waldorf High School. The freshmen-sophomore, junior varsity and varsity teams all won their matches.
“I am on the junior varsity team and yesterday’s game was really fun,” sophomore Adeline Sanford said. “It was so nice being at home and getting to play with my teammates,”
The volleyball season started two weeks before the school year and since then, all three teams have been practicing two hours a day, five times a week. The vigor and frequency of practices are important for the team to improve at critical skills, technique and gameplay scenarios, according to assistant coach Colette Hom.
Practices are usually run with drills, individual skills, team play, and review of film from past games. Varsity and junior varsity share the Herbert Center gymnasium on the Broadway campus and freshmen-sophomore team uses the gym at the Pine-Octavia campus.
“The game went great and we had lots of communication and cheers— you could tell the first home game had a lot of energy and everyone was excited to play,” junior Abby Chacon-Lara said. “The varsity game was very intense and really fun to watch, and it felt good to take home wins across the board,”
The freshman-sophomore team won in two sets, and the junior varsity team won in another quick two. After winning the first set, varsity let the second one slip before getting it back up and taking the next two, with a final score of 3-1. So far, all three teams have competed in three games and are looking forward to junior varsity and varsity playing again tomorrow, taking place at the home gym again to face Drew High School.
“Last night was not an exception to the many amazing games we’ve had in the past,” Sanford said. “My favorite game last year was the Homecoming game, so I’m super excited for that to come.”
