Pink is stronger than you think
Students celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October 13, 2022
This month, Convent & Stuart Hall students celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is dedicated to breast cancer awareness, and Oct. 13 is nationally recognized to be Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness day.
1 in 100 men in the US will develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime in comparison to 1 in 8 women, according to Breast Cancer Now. However, both men and women are key components in building a strong community which supports breast cancer awareness, according to freshman Ella Patzer.
“It’s important to include both men and women, even though this disease is predominantly found in women,” Patzer said. “If we exclude one or the other, it lessens the community that we’ve worked to build,”
Since 2009, the NFL has shown their engagement in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by decorating their sidelines and players with pink accessories. In Paris, the Eiffel Tower glows pink during this month to show their avocation.
Even trivial things you do to show alliance independently can have a similar effect as those done by large corporations, according to freshman Juliete Wu.
“It’s great that large corporations take action, but you don’t need to be a part of an excessive production to be involved,” said Wu. “I wear a pink bracelet every day in October— it’s not life changing, but it makes me feel more of a connection those who may be suffering,”
Convent & Stuart Hall students’ participation in Breast Cancer Awareness Month educates others on their safety concerning breast cancer, as well as exemplifying Sacred Heart Goal 3 according to Wu.
“Educating people on breast cancer teaches them about signs of cancer, but also provides a foundation for others to take action,” Patzer said. “Convent & Stuart Hall students have created a welcoming community by taking small steps to raise awareness during this important month.”
