Student Council will be setting up tables during First and Second Lunch to take dinner orders for the upcoming dance on Friday.

The anticipated dance, titled “The Kickoff,” is an annual social event that welcomes all students to the new school year.

“I like going to this dance because it’s more casual than other dances like Homecoming and Winter Formal,” junior Tara Boyd said. “It’s a great way to meet the new freshmen, show them the ropes and have fun with all of the other students.”

Accompanied by a sports theme, students attending “The Kickoff” are invited to wear any sports team uniform or school spirit gear to the event.

“A lot of the fall sports are starting this week so we want everyone to wear sports gear to raise school spirit,” senior Bella Shea, who is also the Student Council Vice President, said. “We also thought that most people would have sports gear so it would include everyone.”

“The Kickoff” is a great way to connect the community, according to Community Life Chair Paul Pryor Lorentz.

“Over the last couple of years this dance has been the first social event of the year that happens to have dancing,” Pryor Lorentz said. “I think it’s a great opportunity especially for juniors and seniors who are the cultural leaders of the student body to show up to our new freshmen and sophomores how we live together, great together as vanity.”

The food for “The Kickoff” will be ordered from Chick-fil-a, a popular fast food restaurant among students. There is a $5 fee for either eight-piece chicken nuggets, a chicken sandwich or a garden salad.

Members of Student Council will have tables up during First and Second Lunch at both the Broadway Campus and the Pine/Octavia Campus.

“We chose Chick-fil-A because we know its really popular among the student body,” Shea said. “We want attendance to be really high, especially at the first dance of the year and we thought that since it’s really popular it would get a lot of people to come.”

The Kickoff will be at the Pine/Octavia campus from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and admission is free to all students.
