WEB EXCLUSIVE Students and faculty celebrated the Catholic holiday Ash Wednesday in the Stuart Hall High School gym today.

Ash Wednesday marks the start the 40 days of Lent. Many people fast or give up something during these days which represent Jesus Christ’s time in the desert according to BBC.

Freshman Madeleine Saint James said her favorite part of Lent is thinking about how to better herself.

“My family is Catholic so I celebrate the holiday every year,” Saint James said. “To me this tradition is all about sacrifice.”

The mass included singing, prayers, and readings by students, faculty, and Deacon Eddy from Saint Ignatius Parish. Students also had the opportunity to get an ash cross on their forehead.

“I really liked being able to get together as a community,” Sophomore Cecilia McQuaid said. “It was nice being able to celebrate this tradition.”

Students and faculty also had the opportunity to write down something they wanted to give up on a piece of paper and attach it to a wire cross which is on display in the Pine Octavia campus.

“When we were singing together, it really made me connected to everyone else in the room,” Saint James said.
